Job Opportunity: Linesman Assistant (Electrical) – 2 Positions
The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), a facility of the National Research Foundation, is responsible for managing major radio astronomy initiatives in South Africa. We are currently seeking two Linesman Assistants to support our electrical team in the Northern Cape.
Role Overview
In this position, you will work alongside Electrical Technicians and Electricians to maintain and repair electrical lines and power systems across the SARAO Electrical Network. This is a full-time role suited for individuals who enjoy technical work and are comfortable with physical tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the inspection, maintenance, and modification of electrical equipment.
- Support the upkeep and repair of electrical power lines.
- Help technicians with new electrical installations.
- Clean and maintain electrical tools and equipment.
- Perform manual labor tasks, including digging trenches and planting poles.
Job Requirements
Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience criteria:
- Option 1: Grade 12 (Matric) with at least 3 years of experience in maintaining electrical infrastructure.
- Option 2: An Electrical Trade Test Certificate with 0–1 year of experience.
- A valid driver’s license is considered a strong advantage.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Familiarity with electrical maintenance procedures and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and understand electrical drawings.
- Basic knowledge of generator systems and electrical motors.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative team spirit.
- The ability to plan work tasks reliably and adapt to changing needs.
