Medical Officer: Grades 1 to 3 (2 Posts)

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is looking for two dedicated Medical Officers to join our team. We provide essential public healthcare services to the Western Cape community and are seeking professionals committed to high-quality patient care.

Role Overview

  • Job Type: Full-Time
  • Location: Western Cape (Theewaterskloof sub-district)
  • Qualification: Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine
  • Field: Medical and Healthcare

Requirements

  • Current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B/EB/C1).
  • Willingness to perform commuted overtime duties.
  • Ability to travel and provide outreach services to various clinics within the Theewaterskloof sub-district.

Experience Criteria

The position is graded based on your years of professional experience after HPCSA registration:

  • Grade 1: Entry-level for South African qualified practitioners. For foreign-qualified practitioners, 1 year of experience is required.
  • Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years of experience for South African qualified practitioners (6 years for foreign-qualified).
  • Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years of experience for South African qualified practitioners (11 years for foreign-qualified).

Key Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of general medical and surgical conditions at the district hospital level.
  • Expertise in South African TB and HIV care guidelines.
  • Practical skills in performing C-sections, administering anesthesia (spinal and general), and managing chronic conditions.
  • Competency in emergency medical care, including adult and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Good teamwork, interpersonal skills, and basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • The ability to mentor and guide colleagues in managing difficult medical cases.
