Medical Specialist: Psychiatry (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) – Grades 1 to 3

The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is responsible for delivering public healthcare services to the people of the Western Cape. We are looking for qualified and dedicated Medical Specialists to join our team, specifically focusing on child and adolescent mental health.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
  • Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Psychiatry.
  • A valid driver’s license (Code B/EB).
  • A willingness to work after-hours when required.
  • A willingness to participate in outreach programs within the hospital’s catchment area.

Experience Requirements by Grade

  • Grade 1: No experience required after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist.
  • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA.
  • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA.

Key Competencies and Skills

  • Expertise in the clinical assessment and management of mental disorders in children and adolescents.
  • A strong background in clinical governance, research, and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability in administrative tasks and analytical problem-solving.
  • Experience in supervising and training students, registrars, and medical staff.
