Role Purpose
As a Night Hoist Operator, you will be responsible for operating helicopter hoists during night shifts. You will guide the hoist cable and verbally assist the pilot to position the helicopter safely over moving or pitching vessels. Your primary goal is to ensure the safe transfer of marine pilots and cargo in accordance with aviation and port safety regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Operations and Safety:
- Operate the helicopter hoist safely at night over moving vessels.
- Perform offshore slinging of cargo and hoisting of marine pilots.
- Assist with Search and Rescue, VIP transport, and emergency medical evacuations.
- Conduct passenger safety briefings and manage cabin safety during all flights.
- Provide basic first aid in the cabin if required during patient transfers.
Maintenance and Logistics:
- Perform pre-flight inspections of the helicopter and hoisting equipment.
- Conduct daily compressor washes and weekly maintenance of the hoist cable.
- Test fuel samples for aircraft and fuel trucks.
- Refuel the helicopter and operate fuel trucks when necessary.
- Collect and record data for hoist cycles, engine cycles, and logbooks.
- Support the engineering department with various tasks when requested.
Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
- A valid Hoist Operator Competence Certificate for helicopters.
- At least 3 years of experience in general aviation.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
- Strong knowledge of National Ports Act regulations.
- Preferred: Experience with Marine Pilot Service hoisting (approximately 1,000 hoists or 12–18 months of operational experience).
