Principal Technician

Overstrand Municipality is seeking a skilled and dedicated Principal Technician to join our Engineering team in the Western Cape. This is a full-time role suited for a professional with extensive experience in electrical distribution and infrastructure management.

Role Overview

The Principal Technician will be responsible for overseeing the quality of the electrical supply, managing technical staff, and ensuring the distribution network operates safely and efficiently. This position requires strong leadership skills and the ability to handle complex technical challenges in the field.

Key Performance Areas

  • Handle administrative management, planning, and operational controls.
  • Monitor the power supply quality according to National Rationalization Specifications.
  • Perform testing and fault-finding on electrical distribution networks.
  • Coordinate and manage specialist functions within the Metering Department.
  • Lead and supervise staff members to ensure high performance.
  • Participate in standby duties and work overtime when necessary.

Job Requirements

  • Qualification: A National Diploma in Engineering and registration as a Professional Engineering Technician.
  • Trade Certification: Must be a qualified Electrician with a valid Trade Certificate.
  • Experience: At least 8 years of relevant post-registration experience, including 3 to 5 years of switching experience.
  • Licensing: A valid switching license (up to 66,000 volts) and a Code B/EB driver’s license.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Communication: Ability to read, write, and speak in at least two of the three official languages of the Western Cape.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

  • Must be comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work under extreme weather conditions and manage dangerous, high-voltage situations.
  • Must be physically fit and in good health to conduct site inspections.
  • Ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
  • Candidates must not have sight or hearing impairments or be color blind.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills are essential.
  • A deep understanding of Municipal Regulations and electrical network operations.
