Quantity Surveyor

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is seeking a skilled Quantity Surveyor to join our team in Cape Town. SARAO is responsible for managing South Africa’s major radio astronomy initiatives, including the MeerKAT Radio Telescope and the Geodesy and VLBI activities at the HartRAO facility.

Role Overview

The Quantity Surveyor will manage and optimize the financial aspects of our engineering and construction projects. This role involves cost estimation, contract administration, and risk management to ensure all projects are executed successfully and remain within budget.

Job Details

Key Responsibilities

  • Cost Management: Perform detailed measurements, prepare accurate cost estimates for materials and labor, and develop project budgets.
  • Financial Control: Monitor project costs, analyze discrepancies, and implement measures to keep projects within budgetary constraints.
  • Tenders and Contracts: Prepare tender pricing schedules, evaluate bids, and assist in drafting contractual agreements.
  • Valuations: Assess and manage project variations, value completed work, and arrange timely payments.
  • Risk and Reporting: Identify potential financial risks, prepare cost forecasts, and provide regular financial performance reports to management.
  • Compliance: Ensure all work aligns with project specifications, health and safety regulations, and industry standards.
  • Development: Contribute to the improvement of project management frameworks and stay updated on the latest industry trends.

Requirements

  • Education: An Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field. Professional registration is a plus.
  • Experience: At least 4 years of substantial experience in the engineering and construction sector, specifically with large-scale projects.
  • Technical Knowledge: Familiarity with NEC4, FIDIC, and GCC contract conditions. Understanding of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) is preferred.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in quantity surveying software and the Microsoft Office Suite.
