Researcher: Nematology
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is looking for a dedicated Researcher in Nematology to join our team in Stellenbosch, Western Cape. As a leading institution in South African agricultural research, we seek a professional who can drive excellence in research and development to support the agricultural sector.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will lead and manage research projects focused on plant nematology. This role involves everything from the initial project proposal to the final delivery of results. You will be responsible for maintaining high scientific standards, securing funding, and sharing your findings with both the scientific community and the agricultural industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Research Management: Initiate, coordinate, and lead research projects on time and within budget.
- Innovation: Propose and complete research programs that align with the ARC’s corporate strategy.
- Knowledge Sharing: Disseminate research results through peer-reviewed journals, presentations, and industry reports.
- Technology Transfer: Develop training programs and information days to share new technologies and services with clients and farmers.
- Financial Oversight: Manage project budgets effectively and follow all financial procedures.
- Resource Management: Ensure research infrastructure and equipment are well-maintained and used efficiently.
- Funding: Actively identify new research opportunities and write proposals to secure external funding.
- Mentorship: Provide guidance and supervision to postgraduate students.
Job Requirements
- A PhD in Nematology with at least 3 years of relevant experience, or an MSc in Plant Nematology with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
- Specific experience in identifying and managing nematode pests in grapevines and deciduous fruit.
- A proven record of publishing work in scientific journals.
- Demonstrated success in generating external income for research projects.
- A valid South African driver’s license.
- Registration with a professional scientific body is considered an advantage.
