Job Opportunity: Researcher – Plant Improvement (Gene Banks)

About the Role
The ARC-Tropical & Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) division is looking for a highly skilled and dynamic Researcher to join our team in Nelspruit. This role focuses on managing and improving plant gene banks to support agricultural research and development in South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the gene bank manager to oversee field and nursery gene bank blocks at research farms.
- Maintain and update the existing gene bank database to ensure it meets international standards.
- Expand current storage methods to include laboratory-based solutions using in vitro technologies.
- Perform research tasks in both field and laboratory environments.
- Prepare and present monthly and quarterly progress reports.
- Identify new research opportunities and implement modern technologies for gene bank management.
- Collect, record, and analyze research data.
- Provide guidance and leadership to research technicians, assistants, and students.
- Coordinate daily activities with researchers, farm managers, and support staff.
- Write scientific papers and present research findings to the public and the scientific community.
Job Requirements
- A PhD in Horticulture, Plant Production, Agriculture, Biological Sciences, or Natural Sciences.
- A strong understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) rules.
- Advanced computer skills.
- A valid Code EB driver’s license and the ability to drive.
- Experience with managing databases is a plus.
- Registration with a professional scientific body is an advantage.
