Researcher: Plant Production
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is South Africa’s premier agricultural research institution. The Tropical & Subtropical Crops division (ARC-TSC) is currently seeking a highly skilled and dynamic Researcher to join our team in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal. This is a full-time position dedicated to excellence in agricultural research and development.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will lead research projects focused on improving production methods and propagation systems for tropical and subtropical fruit trees. This role involves a combination of scientific research, farm management, and team leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage research projects regarding tropical and subtropical fruit production.
- Oversee the maintenance and optimal use of farm facilities and equipment.
- Ensure all routine farm practices are carried out on time to support research goals.
- Supervise and lead farm workers and research staff.
- Write scientific publications and present research findings to growers, industry partners, and the scientific community.
- Prepare project proposals and manage assigned budgets.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to research technicians, assistants, and students.
- Maintain professional relationships with industry officers and government representatives.
Job Requirements
- Education: A PhD in Plant Production, Horticulture, Agronomy, Agricultural Management, or Plant Breeding.
- Experience: At least 3 years of experience in a scientific research environment.
- Publications: A proven track record of at least 3 scientific publications.
- Skills: Strong knowledge of tropical and subtropical crop management.
- Leadership: Experience in mentoring junior staff and students.
- License: A valid Code EB driver’s license.
- Technical: Advanced computer literacy.
- Preferences: Practical experience in farm management and registration with a professional scientific body are considered advantages.
