Security Officers (Levels CB1-1, CB1-2, and CB1-3)

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is a branch of the South African government dedicated to managing the country’s prison system. With a workforce of approximately 34,000 employees, the department oversees 240 correctional facilities and ensures the safe and humane custody of nearly 190,000 inmates.

Requirements

To qualify for these roles, candidates must possess a Matric/Grade 12 certificate and have successfully completed the Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training, or Induction Training Course (ITC).

  • CB1-1: This is an entry-level grade. No previous experience is required.
  • CB1-2: Requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience at the CB1-1 level.
  • CB1-3: Requires a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience at the CB1-2 level.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and rehabilitation standards of the correctional facility. Primary duties include:

  • Managing access control at various points within the correctional center.
  • Monitoring and controlling the movement of inmates internally and during external transport.
  • Guarding inmates within the facility and at external public institutions.
  • Conducting regular physical security inspections to ensure safety.
  • Managing security equipment and department stores.
  • Operating the security control room.
  • Supporting the rehabilitation of offenders by maintaining a secure and humane detention environment.
