The Western Cape Department of Agriculture (WCDoA) is dedicated to supporting and developing the agricultural sector. Job Purpose
The department is looking for a qualified professional to promote sustainable development within the agricultural sector. In this role, you will apply expert extension principles and advisory methods to help farmers grow and maintain successful enterprises.
Minimum Requirements
- A 4-year BSc Agriculture degree or a BAgric Honours degree, majoring in Agricultural Economics (NQF level 8 or equivalent).
- At least 3 years of experience providing specialist input as an agricultural economist within advisory services.
- Professional registration with SACNASP or another recognized professional body.
- A valid Code B driving license.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Planning: Create and interpret enterprise budgets, financial statements, and cash flow projections.
- Business Support: Develop and evaluate business plans to ensure agricultural projects are economically viable.
- Advisory Services: Provide continuous support to farmers regarding land reform, infrastructure, and production principles.
- Training: Facilitate workshops to help farmers manage financial and production records effectively.
- Market Access: Help farmers reach new markets and ensure they meet all necessary compliance standards.
- Project Management: Conduct site visits, monitor project progress, and use the Agricultural Information Management System (AIMS) to track data.
- Administration: Manage human resources, oversee finances, and write technical progress reports.
Required Skills and Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of agricultural production economics and farm-level business principles.
- Understanding of local crop and livestock production and market value chains.
- Strong project management and research abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting and leadership.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- A solid understanding of the Land Reform Programme and commodity-based agricultural approaches.
