Senior Forensic Officer
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is responsible for providing public healthcare services to the Western Cape province of South Africa. We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Forensic Officer to join our team.
Role Overview
The Senior Forensic Officer provides essential support in forensic investigations and medical-legal procedures. This role combines technical forensic work with administrative duties, including corporate governance, supply chain support, and resource management.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent.
- Experience: Appropriate experience as a Forensic Pathology Officer, including experience in forensic investigation and evisceration.
- Administrative Experience: Experience supporting corporate governance, revenue management, or expenditure processes.
- License: A valid Code B/EB driver’s license.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct forensic investigations and perform evisceration procedures.
- Support the Manager with corporate governance, finance, and supply chain functions.
- Monitor the use of consumables and assist with procurement planning and budget management.
- Manage fleet, assets, and store supplies efficiently.
- Assist in planning and training for major incident exercises.
- Perform office duties, standby duties, and overtime as required.
- Handle and transport corpses, including those that may be mutilated, decomposed, or infectious.
- Operate 4×4 vehicles and perform forensic photography as needed.
Required Skills and Competencies
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of forensic pathology legislation, regulations, and ethical standards.
- Communication: Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in writing and in person.
- Analytical Ability: Strong numerical skills for budgeting, forecasting, and checking claims.
- Problem Solving: Ability to work under pressure, meet strict deadlines, and solve complex issues within a team.
- Computer Literacy: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and forensic business systems.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff and clients while upholding departmental values.
Additional Information
The successful candidate must be physically capable of lifting and working with corpses and will be required to wear a formal uniform. The role involves a mix of clinical forensic work and administrative oversight.
