The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) is a facility of the National Research Foundation. It is responsible for managing major radio astronomy initiatives in South Africa, including the MeerKAT Radio Telescope in the Karoo and the HartRAO facility. SARAO also coordinates international efforts like the African Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) network.
Position: Senior Storage Engineer
Location: Cape Town, Western Cape

Role Overview
As a Senior Storage Engineer, you will maintain both physical and virtual storage systems. Your primary goal is to ensure the consistent availability of business-critical information by configuring data redundancy, supporting disaster recovery, and monitoring capacity usage.
Key Responsibilities
- Help develop long-term strategies for data storage.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and drive innovation in storage solutions.
- Maintain detailed documentation of storage configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Generate regular reports on system performance and storage utilization.
Job Requirements
Educational Background (One of the following):
- B.Tech or B.Sc in Computer Science (or a related field) with at least 13 years of experience.
- B.Eng or B.Sc Honors in Computer Science (or a related field) with at least 8 years of experience.
Professional Experience:
- At least 6 years of specific experience in storage system administration.
- Experience working in a high-performance computing (HPC) environment is highly preferred.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Storage Technologies: Deep understanding of SAN, NAS, and Cloud storage.
- Protocols: Expertise in FC, iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS.
- Operating Systems: Advanced skills in Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows installation and administration.
- Security: Experience with intrusion detection and data backup/recovery.
- Programming: Proficient in Python, C, and C++.
- Infrastructure: Knowledge of Ansible, Puppet, Chef, and server hardware.
- Monitoring & Logging: Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack, and Elastic.
- Virtualization: Familiarity with OpenStack, Proxmox, and Docker.
- Distributed Storage: Knowledge of Ceph, Lustre, and MinIO.
