About the Role
This internship offers a unique opportunity to work with Rheinmetall AG’s Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) team. You will support the management and supervision in maintaining and improving safety standards across our facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in compiling Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRA) and updating them every two years or after incidents.
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, NEMA, and other relevant legislation.
- Contribute to modifications, works programmes, and authorisations for plant operations.
- Maintain and renew certifications for the organization and site.
- Review, audit, and close findings from certification audits.
- Participate in internal audits, inspections, and Werda exercises.
- Respond to emergencies and support emergency planning.
- Conduct plant inspections and planned task observations.
- Track and close audit/inspection findings and non-conformances.
- Report incidents to the Department of Labour and compile investigation reports.
- Implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
- Attend SHE/R meetings and issue safety alerts and infographics.
- Investigate employee complaints and external concerns.
- Communicate legal updates and changes in legislation to management and staff.
- Assist in preparing SHE statistics and communicating trends.
- Update SHE standards, procedures, and policies.
- Review Product Manufacturing Instructions (PMI) and Facility Operating Instructions (FOI) for safety compliance.
- Ensure all permits, licenses, certificates, and authorisations are current.
- Support legal compliance audits and address findings.
- Adhere to Rheinmetall Denel Munitions policies and ISO standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental or Safety Management, or equivalent NQF 7 qualification.
- Experience in an explosives environment is advantageous.
- Knowledge of ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, and ISO 45001.
- Proficiency in Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA).
- Training in SHE legal liability and legislation.
- Completion of a Waste Management Course.
- Completion of an Incident Investigation Course.
- Desirable: SAMTRAC certification.
- Valid driver’s licence (Code B).
