About the Role

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is looking for a highly skilled Audit Specialist to join our Illicit Economy Unit. In this role, you will conduct complex audits to ensure tax compliance and identify tax evasion or avoidance schemes. You will use your expertise to close tax gaps, suggest legislative changes, and provide technical guidance to other auditors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complex Auditing: Analyze complicated transactions across various tax types and entities to ensure they follow the law.
  • Risk Identification: Use advanced tools and data analysis to identify tax risks, including those related to e-commerce and digital transactions.
  • Technical Support: Provide expert advice and coaching to fellow auditors on difficult cases.
  • Legal & Litigation Support: Work with legal teams to handle disputes and provide testimony in court when necessary.
  • Investigation & Referral: Identify serious tax offenses and refer them for criminal investigation.
  • Process Improvement: Recommend ways to improve auditing systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate with taxpayers, practitioners, and internal departments to resolve audits and manage debt collection.

Requirements

  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Auditing, Accounting, or Taxation.
  • Experience: At least 8 years of experience in Audit, Financial Forensic Audit, or Investigative Auditing. At least 3 to 4 of those years should be at a senior or Level III auditor level.
