Company: Transnet

Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal

Job Type: Full Time

About Transnet

Transnet is a vital part of South Africa’s freight logistics chain, employing approximately 38,000 people across the country. We manage the nation’s major transport infrastructure and are dedicated to maintaining world-class standards to support the Southern African economy.

Position Purpose

The primary goal of this role is to safeguard the organization’s ICT systems and networks. As a Cyber Security Specialist, you will design and implement security architectures that help the business reach its strategic goals. Your daily tasks will include creating, testing, and monitoring security systems to prevent data breaches and respond to cyber-attacks.

The successful candidate will evaluate the security of internal and external networks, mobile applications, and data standards. You will also be expected to think like a “threat actor” (hacker) to test our defenses through simulated attacks, ensuring our infrastructure remains resilient against real-world threats like ransomware.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology (an Honours Degree is an advantage).
  • Experience: At least 5 years of IT experience, specifically in cyber security and architecture at a senior or specialist level.
  • Preferred Certifications: CISSP, OSCP, or CCSP.
  • Added Advantages: SAP Security Certification or Microsoft Azure Security credentials.
  • Licensing: A valid Code 08 driver’s license is required, as the role involves occasional travel.

Required Skills and Knowledge

We are looking for a professional with a deep understanding of cyber threats and the ability to emulate “hacker” tactics to assess risk. Key technical requirements include:

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Unix, Bash scripting, Python coding, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Cloud Security: Experience with AWS and Azure cloud technologies.
  • Offensive Security: Hands-on experience with penetration testing and exploiting web application vulnerabilities (e.g., SQL injection, API attacks).
  • Network Defense: Expertise in firewalls (Palo Alto), VPNs, IDS/IPS, and vulnerability management.
  • Frameworks: Familiarity with ISO 27001, ITIL, and COBIT standards.
  • Environments: Knowledge of SAP, Windows Server, UNIX (AIX), and Oracle. Experience with SCADA or PLC environments is a plus.

Equity Statement

Transnet is committed to employment equity. Preference will be given to qualified applicants from designated groups in line with our Employment Equity Plan.
