About the Role

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is looking for a Data Engineering Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will provide expert advice and technical solutions in data analytics to help the organization achieve its strategic business objectives. You will be responsible for the end-to-end data lifecycle, from building pipelines to supporting machine learning models.

Job Purpose

To analyze data and provide expert guidance on data analytics practices. You will ensure that our data systems are efficient, accurate, and capable of providing the insights needed for high-level decision-making.

Requirements

Option 1: Degree Path

• A relevant Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF 7) in Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Data Science.
• 8 to 10 years of experience in a Data Analytics environment.
• At least 3 to 4 years of experience at a junior specialist level.

Option 2: Experience Path

• Senior Certificate (NQF 4).
• 15 years of related experience in a Data Analytics environment.
• At least 3 to 4 years of experience at a junior specialist level.

Technical Requirements

• Advanced experience in Data Engineering and Business Intelligence.
• Expertise in the machine learning lifecycle, including creating data pipelines and datasets for ML models.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL, SSIS, and SSAS (or equivalent data tools).
• Strong knowledge of Data Lineage and Data Engineering principles.
• Advanced understanding of Mathematics and Statistics.

Key Responsibilities

Process and Data Management

• Design, develop, and test complex data solutions, including reports, dashboards, and predictive models.
• Acquire data from various sources and maintain databases using advanced extraction and transformation techniques.
• Clean and filter data to ensure high quality and integrity across all systems.
• Identify and interpret trends or patterns in complex datasets to support business research.
• Monitor and improve existing data systems to resolve deficiencies.
• Translate high-level policies into practical data practices for the team.

Governance and Risk

• Develop and align governance policies to manage risk and ensure compliance within your area of expertise.
• Implement financial controls and manage costs effectively.

Stakeholder and Team Support

• Provide expert advice to internal and external stakeholders.
• Share knowledge and provide leadership to team members to improve overall organizational skills.
• Build strong relationships with clients by delivering excellent service and technical support.
