Role Overview
We are looking for a SQL & Database Practitioner to join our Terminal Operating System (TOS) team in Durban. In this role, you will support our SQL Database Administrators and System Developers in managing new and existing databases. You will play a key part in extracting data, running queries, and ensuring our systems run smoothly 24/7 to support our port and inland terminals.
Key Responsibilities
- Administration: Develop technical plans, keep documentation up to date, and manage database changes according to company policies.
- Technical Support: Monitor database performance, identify bottlenecks, and assist with regular backups and data recovery.
- Security & Maintenance: Manage user access and data encryption. Perform routine maintenance, such as software updates and security patches.
- Data Integrity: Ensure all stored data is accurate and follows regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose database issues and work with the senior DBA to find long-term solutions.
- Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and develop database solutions that meet business needs.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you should meet the following criteria:
- Education: A degree or diploma in Information Technology or Computer Science (NQF 6).
- Experience:
- 3 to 5 years of experience in database administration with a relevant degree.
- Alternatively, 8 years of experience if you hold an NQF 5 certificate.
- Skills: Experience working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- SQL Server or Microsoft certifications.
- Experience in a supervisory role.
- Completion of the Transnet Supervisory Development Programme.
