Technical Assistant III: Laboratory (Mechanical Engineering Science)

Role Overview

We are seeking a Technical Assistant for the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science. In this role, you will work closely with lecturers to prepare and conduct laboratory sessions. You will also be responsible for managing laboratory equipment and ensuring all technical matters are resolved efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up laboratory equipment and test environments for student experiments.
  • Lead practical sessions and collaborate with academic staff.
  • Manage, evaluate, and report on technical issues within the lab.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory and perform regular quality checks.
  • Handle client inquiries and manage purchase orders.
  • Ensure all laboratories and equipment are kept clean and organized.
  • Enforce strict safety protocols and laboratory procedures.

Minimum Requirements

  • A Diploma (NQF 6) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • At least three years of technical experience (experience in a university setting is an advantage).
  • Proven technical skills and the ability to troubleshoot in a lab environment.
  • Experience working with industrial engineering equipment and specialized software.
  • Practical knowledge of PLC programming, robotics, and automation technologies.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills suitable for an academic environment.
  • Proficiency in report writing and data analysis.
  • Expertise in maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in the mechanical engineering industry.
