Role Purpose
The primary goal of this role is to assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various types of trains and locomotives. You will help ensure that cargo reaches its destination on time and in good condition while maintaining high safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
As a Trainee Train Assistant, your duties will include:
- Locomotive Preparation: Assist with starting locomotives, conducting brake tests, and ensuring all necessary equipment is on board and functional.
- Safety Inspections: Perform pre-trip inspections of locomotives and the entire train to ensure roadworthiness and compliance with safety rules.
- Communication: Prepare and check communication tools such as radios, handsets, and telemeters.
- Shunting Activities: Help with attaching or detaching rail vehicles and updating vehicle lists.
- Enroute Support: Assist the driver by observing signals, monitoring locomotive performance, and protecting the train during any incidents or emergencies.
- Administration: Complete train journals and other required paperwork accurately to ensure proper processing of shifts and salaries.
Requirements
To be considered for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Education: Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
- Physical Attributes: A minimum height of 1.6 meters and the physical strength to carry heavy objects.
- Health: Ability to pass medical surveillance tests, including vision, hearing, and mental fitness assessments.
- Testing: Candidates must demonstrate psychomotor ability through the Vienna Testing System (VTS).
- Training: A willingness to undergo both theoretical and practical training to become certified as a Train Assistant.
- Age Requirement: Please note that safety regulations require employees to be at least 21 years old before undertaking full train driver or control duties.
