Position Purpose

As a Trainee Train Assistant, you will support the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of various locomotive types, including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, and heavy-haul trains. Your goal is to ensure that freight and cargo reach their destinations in good condition and on time, helping the organization meet customer needs.

Requirements and Qualifications

Educational Requirements

• Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.

Physical and Health Requirements

• Minimum Height: You must be at least 1.6 meters tall.
• Physical Fitness: You must be able to carry heavy objects and pass medical tests for hearing, vision, and mental fitness.
• Medical Assessments: You must be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety risk assessments every 12 months.
• Aptitude: Candidates will be assessed for psychomotor ability via the Vienna Testing System (VTS).

General Requirements

• Age: In accordance with safety regulations (SANS 3000), candidates must be at least 21 years old to undertake train control duties.
• Training: You must be willing to complete both theoretical and practical functional training to become a certified Train Assistant.
