About the Role
The Department of Health is looking for two Dental Assistants to work on a sessional basis. The role involves supporting dentists during all dental procedures, maintaining infection control, managing hazardous waste, and assisting with X‑rays and oral hygiene screening.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the dentist with all dental procedures, including mixing materials and sterilising instruments.
- Maintain infection control and hazardous waste management in the clinic.
- Clean and dust the dental clinic regularly.
- Develop X‑rays where applicable.
- Assist in the theatre and during screening with oral hygienists.
- Liaise with dental clinics and other programmes.
Requirements
- Grade 12 with a National Certificate in Dental Assisting or prior experience as a dental assistant registered with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- Proof of current registration with HPCSA as a Dental Assistant.
- Grade 1: 1–9 years of experience as a dental assistant.
- Grade 2: 10 years or more of experience as a dental assistant.

All foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accompanied by an evaluation certificate.
Applicants will undergo a personnel suitability check (criminal record, citizenship, credit record, qualification verification, employment verification) and may be required to take a skills/knowledge test and medical surveillance as per the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
